When insomnia lasts for months

Chronic insomnia means trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or returning to sleep on three or more nights a week for at least three months. Around Spokane it may be held in place by rotating shifts, seasonal work or early winter darkness. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) uses weekly conversations and changes at home. It improves sleep timing and habits without medication. Your plan is based on your actual schedule.

With sleep apnea, breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Loud snoring can be a warning sign. It is separate from insomnia, though the two often appear together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

What happens at the first appointment

The first visit is about 50 minutes. Your clinician listens to how your nights work now, what has already been tried and whether insomnia is the cause. You then keep a two-minute morning sleep diary recording bedtime, sleep, waking and getting up. From it, you build a sleep window: set times for bed and waking that widen as sleep improves. Sessions usually continue for six to eight weeks. Some patients notice improvement during the first few weeks. Our getting-started page explains the next step.

Four Spokane questions, answered

Does CBT-I work by video for Spokane patients?

Yes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia uses conversation, a sleep diary and changes to your sleep schedule. These parts of treatment work well by video. You need a private space and a reliable internet connection.

I live in Idaho but work in Spokane. When can you see me?

You can meet while you are physically in Washington. A private room at work in Spokane is fine. A session from home across the state line is not. Tell us where you will be when you book.

What if I snore or think I may need a sleep study?

A sleep study is an overnight test for breathing problems such as sleep apnea. It is not needed to diagnose insomnia. Sleep apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

Is there a Washington Better Sleep office in Spokane?

No. The Washington office is at 14110 NE 21st St. in Bellevue. Nearly everyone we treat is seen by video. Only a limited number of clinicians offer in-person appointments, and those visits are in Bellevue. Ask about them when you book.
