Why Washington Better Sleep?

Why refer for CBT-I?

  • Treats persistent sleep difficulties

CBT-I addresses the patterns of behavior and worry that can prolong insomnia.

  • Provides lasting tools

The course teaches patients how to maintain their sleep routine and manage future disruptions.

  • Specialist care

Every treating clinician is licensed in Washington and trained in CBT-I.

  • Direct insurance billing

We check the patient’s benefits before treatment and bill participating plans.

  • Communication across the care team

With patient authorization, sleep measures and treatment updates can inform the work you continue in your practice.

When insomnia needs specialist care

An adult patient may be a good candidate when they have:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep on three or more nights a week for three months or longer.
  • Sleep problems that continue while anxiety, depression or sleep apnea is being treated.
  • An interest in improving sleep without adding a prescription.

Adding sleep treatment to existing therapy

CBT-I can be provided while a patient continues other therapy. It gives insomnia dedicated attention within a defined course of treatment.

The clinician uses a sleep diary to guide a personalized bedtime and wake time.

Suspect sleep apnea too?

Insomnia frequently occurs with sleep apnea. We treat insomnia and work with partners for apnea treatment, with referrals coordinated by our clinician.

Score your own sleep

Answer all seven questions about the past two weeks. The Insomnia Severity Index adds your answers into a score between 0 and 28. This calculator does not submit a referral or add results to a medical record at Washington Better Sleep.

For the first three questions, please rate the current (last 2 weeks) severity of your insomnia problem(s):

1. Difficulty falling asleep
2. Difficulty staying asleep
3. Problem waking up too early
4. How satisfied/dissatisfied are you with your current sleep pattern?
5. How noticeable to others do you think your sleep problem is in terms of impairing the quality of your life?
6. How worried/distressed are you about your current sleep problem?
7. To what extent do you consider your sleep problem to interfere with your daily functioning (e.g., daytime fatigue, mood, ability to function at work or with daily chores, concentration, memory) currently?

A score is not a diagnosis. Discuss the result and your sleep history with a licensed clinician. A referral to Washington Better Sleep does not require a particular score.

The Washington treatment program

Patients who prefer to contact us themselves can book without a provider referral. Book an appointment.

1

We contact your patient

Once we receive your referral, our Washington team contacts the patient to discuss coverage and set up the assessment.

2

Treatment begins

We begin with an assessment lasting about 50 minutes, followed by weekly visits over a typical six-to-eight-week course. Patients keep a brief daily sleep diary. Their clinician reviews it to adjust the sleep schedule, address difficulties and prepare a plan for maintaining progress.

3

We keep you informed

With patient authorization, sleep measures and treatment updates can inform the work you continue in your practice.

Most visits are by video with clinicians licensed in Washington. A limited number of clinicians also offer appointments in person at our Bellevue office; we confirm availability during booking. The patient must be physically in Washington for each visit.
